Sport has run through Cecil Chao's life.
Swimming
He came to the water as a small boy with asthma. His mother nursed him back to health and made him take up swimming, and it stayed with him. As a young man he swam butterfly for the Hong Kong team. He still remembers his coach working him through a hundred laps of the pool before breakfast.

Basketball and golf
He played competitive basketball as a young man and never stopped. Basketball and golf were weekly fixtures well into his late eighties, with alumni, old friends and his own team. The Hong Kong Basketball Association made him an Honorary Member in 2019, and in 2018 he scored a hole-in-one at the Hong Kong Golf Club.
